It’s only natural that distilling a good craft beer would eventually make for an excellent whiskey. After all, they both start as fermented grain, and to make whiskey, you start by making beer! This one starts its life as Blue Point Brewing Company’s Old Howling Bastard – a big, rich, barley wine-style ale. Then the folks at nearby Long Island Spirits distill it, age it in small oak casks and bring it to proof with water from the aquifer flowing beneath the 100, 000-acre Pine Barrens Forest Preserve. A full-bodied spirit with toffee and vanilla tones, and the hops in the beer add a subtle hint of pine to the background. But it’s also surprisingly smooth and sippable for such a young whiskey, making it a great choice for beer lovers or anyone looking for a new twist on an ancient spirit. tip of the tongue It takes 850 gallons of beer to make just 100 gallons of this whiskey, so we recommend sipping it straight with a hoppy beer chaser to celebrate the circle of life.
