Indie Gin Trio

The bottles in this flight are awesome examples of the wonderful world of American gin, where indie distillers are toning down classic juniper to make room for more botanicals. This might go without saying for some, but it should be noted: Gin can be infused with a wide variety of botanicals that contribute flavor and aroma, but it MUST contain juniper berries, which are what gives gin that distinct piney, gin-y taste. We’ve lined up three different top-shelf takes here. First, a true masterpiece of a gin. More than a dozen herbs and fruits go into the botanical mix, a modern style in which the Juniper is in harmony with the other botanicals. The complex distillation involves multiple steps for different ingredients (it’s so complex, each distilling run produces fewer than 300 bottles). Much of the process is top-secret, but our favorite part (shhh) is that the over-proof spirit is brought to the right level of heat by adding cucumber water made with Persian cucumbers (only the best!). Next up, an American take on London dry gin. Rightfully piney and floral, unusually smooth, this Russell Henry gin is first distilled by hand in an antique cognac still at Tamar Distillery in California. The second distillation is where the magic happens – a secret (shhh) blend of botanicals including coriander, raspberry-esque orris root and lemon zest. Juniper is present, of course, but never overwhelms. Last: a classic American dry gin. Breuckelen Distilling’s Glorious Gin showcases fresh rosemary, spicy ginger, fresh grapefruit and lemon peel, in a 100% New York State-grown wheat spirit. All three are great sipped solo or mixed into cocktail classics (think: dry martini, gin and tonic). Makes a great gift for any budding gin enthusiast, who’ll sport a gin-drinking grin in no time!
