This is the book that takes it reader on a photographic journey of one of the world’s most iconic cities. It spans nearly 600 pages, features the work of over 150 photographers, and is broken into five sections that cover the city’s history and show how New York influenced American culture over the decades. Starting in 1853 with a grainy picture of residences in pre-Civil War upper Manhattan that resembles a small village, the book contains classic images such the Brooklyn Bridge from 1890, Mulberry Street in 1900, and the “kissing couple” on V-J Day in 1945. Others include James Dean in Times Square in 1955, an on-location production shot of West Side Story in 1961, and a crowd’s reaction to John Lennon’s death in 1980.
