If Riesling plays second fiddle to the popstars of the white wine charts, then Ovum’s Off the Grid is the indie band you didn’t know was missing from your life. Ovum specializes in Riesling, so it’s no wonder Off the Grid (one of four they currently make) is one of the best we’ve ever had. It starts life on a vineyard located near the Oregon-California border, far from civilization. A large creek once inhabited the site, where blue serpentine, a gorgeous mineral, can be found scattered amongst piles of river rock. Due to the high mineral content of the soil, the 20-year old vines and Ovum’s low-intervention methods, this Riesling is insanely terroir-focused. Think: smoky minerality, yellow plums and apricots balanced with a dry acidity that doesn’t strip the texture or finish. Did we mention it also has a 15-30 year aging potential? And it tastes even better on vinyl. Tip of the Tongue Riesling is a “chef’s wine” as it pairs with so many dishes. We especially love it served with spicy chicken, well-seasoned pork chops, roasted veggies, soft cheeses and dried fruits.
