This elegant yet accessible blend of varietals from Iberia and France’s Rhône wine region (Tempranillo, Grenache, Cabernet Franc and Malbec) is one lively, food-friendly wine. It opens with seductive aromas of black cherry, clove and cigar box, leading into a structured palate with flavors of black currant, sweet earth and notes of river stone. (Yep, river stone.) The wine has a lengthy finish, leaving behind aromas of elderberry and brown sugar. Ransom Wines & Spirits was started by Tad Seestedt in 1997 with his life savings and a bunch of credit cards. The name is a nod to the debt he took on to follow his dream! He began producing small amounts of brandy, both aged an un-aged, then started producing wines in 1999. Tad doesn’t have set rules, but he says that decisions are based on “taste, the other four senses, a small degree of common sense, instinct and, of course, what the grapes themselves want to do.” Tad says the farmers “harvested the grapes in short-sleeved shirts and counted their blessings.” We’re counting ours, too. Note: This is selling like hotcakes, so get yours before we run out! And we recommend drinking the bottle now, but it will cellar well for a decade (if you can wait that long!). TIP OF THE TONGUE This rustic and earthy wine is crying out to be served with a tomato sauced pasta. Our current favorite: Baia Pasta’s Whole Spelt Twins (Gemelli) mixed with Jar Goods’ Classic Red Sauce, topped with a generous heap of fresh Parmesan, a pinch of red pepper flakes and some hand-torn basil.
