French sculptor Rodin’s most famous work, “The Thinker” was originally part of a larger work called “Gates of Hell,” based on The Divine Comedy; a poem by Dante Alighieri. Instantly recognizable the world over, it has been described as “summing up the spirit of the day” as a monument to heroic labor. Originally named The Poet; the piece was part of a commission by the Mus`ee des Arts D`ecoratifs.
