Wood sculpture, ‘Gushie Guardian’ (Ghana)

This imposing statuette comes from the Gushie people of northern Ghana. Mask-like, the central visage stares fixedly with watchful eyes. On either side, other faces stand guard. By Wilson Aboagye, this image is the most visible sign of the lineage of which it is protector. It punishes the guilty and it also pursues witches. Such images are placed in shrines.
